One man's interpretation of the Ten Commandments:
God gave the people of Israel His commandments during their journey
out of Egypt into the land of Israel. God's laws are absolute, and to
break any of these laws means death. But God's laws are also incredibly
good advice from a loving parent to His children on how to live the
best life possible. We should take advantage of God's advice today to
improve our lives and the lives of those we love.
Proverbs 4:1-2The Ten Commandments are written in Jewish Scripture as well as the Holy Bible. The Holy Bible, New King James Version, is quoted here.
Hear, my children, the instructions of a father, and give attention to know understanding; for I give you good doctrine: Do not forsake my law.
God's Commandments:
1 (Bible: Exodus 20:2-3): I am the Lord Your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. You shall have no other gods before Me.2 (Bible: Exodus 20:4-6): You shall not make for yourself any carved image -- any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them, nor serve them, for I, the Lord Your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.
3 (Bible: Exodus 20:7): You shall not take the name of the Lord Your God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.
4 (Bible: Exodus 20:8-11): Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor, and do all your work; but the seventh day is a Sabbath of the Lord Your God. In it you shall do no work, you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates. For in six days the Lord made heavens and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.
5 (Bible: Exodus 20:12): Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the Lord God is giving you.
6 (Bible: Exodus 20:13): You shall not murder.
7 (Bible: Exodus 20:13): You shall not commit adultery.
8 (Bible: Exodus 20:13): You shall not steal.
9 (Bible: Exodus 20:13): You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
10 (Bible: Exodus 20:14): You shall not covet your neighbor's house; you shall not covet your neighbor's wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbor's.
Jesus also summarized the Ten Commandments with these two commandments:
1. Love the Lord your God with all of your heart, all of your mind, all of your soul,
and all of your strength.
2. Love your neighbor as yourself. (i.e. love all men like you love yourself)
